What leadership looks like

For more than 60 years, the National Association of Independent Schools has provided services, resources, and guidance to independent schools across the United States. But in an ever-changing and increasingly complex educational landscape, NAIS realized it needed to recenter the organization and refresh the brand, to better reflect its role as the national leader for independent schools. NAIS resonated with Grafik’s strategic methodology and thorough approach and we partnered to rethink the brand, messaging, and visual identity, as well as overhaul the NAIS website.

Grafik’s brand team dug deep into every aspect of the association’s work, gathering data; administering surveys to employees, members, and non-members; researching competitors and partner organizations; and interviewing executives—all to learn not only what NAIS is to independent schools across the country, but also what it can be.

After immersing in the quantitative and qualitative data, our team pinpointed positioning opportunities for the organization: NAIS already held a strong position as the only national association representing independent schools—but with many other regional or affiliation-specific associations vying for share of attention, they needed a brand refresh that helped them stand out while reinforcing their place as a forward-looking, vocal leader and vital resource.

As our brand team developed positioning and messaging that helped NAIS unlock its individuality, our design team created two visual directions to explore. Taking into consideration gaps in the industry, opportunities in color and type, and the design legacy of the organization, our designers also drew on their own experiences and memories of the value of school to create two different logos and corresponding visual identities.

Once NAIS chose a direction, we worked closely with them on a brand rollout that included internal and external messaging, a new logo system, a brand toolkit, iconography, interior branding for the NAIS headquarters, social and digital assets, and much more. We launched the brand with a campaign focused on leadership, centered around a new video that reflects all that NAIS is to independent schools.

Following the brand launch, Grafik is working with NAIS to re-strategize, restructure, and redesign its website with a modern look and completely new user experience. After analyzing competitors and NAIS’ own metrics and traffic data, we held several workshops with the NAIS team to dig into their assets and needs, as well as identify their major website personas. All of this led into a new sitemap and a detailed digital strategy that is guiding the design and development of a new site that will help members access the breadth and depth of resources NAIS provides every day to its community.
